a blue gift in Christmas eve - Le Grand Bleu

Wrote on Dec.25th, 2005

I knew this film for a long time but I didn't meet its DVD till last Sunday. So it is really a Christmas gift to me.

It's really a long film but not a boring one. As a fan of dophine like the hero, I can't stop watching to get the answer of this film. Finally it came in mid night. The guy with a babylike innocent smile went to the big blue without a reason to get back.

I was moved when Jacques told Johana that story "Do you know what you are supposed to do to meet a mermaid? You go down to the bottom of the sea where the water is not even blue anymore, and the sky is only a memory, a thought in the silence. And you stay there. Then you decide that you will die for them. Only then do they start coming out. They come and they greet you and they judge the love that you have for them. if it is sincere, if it is pure, they will be with you. take you away forever." I thought it was a kind of showing how true love was between them.
But when finally I saw Johana shouting to the sea "Go! Go to see, My love..." and set the rope away, I understood that story was for Jacques's love to the sea where his spirit stayed.

That's a great film. Though the ending is so blue, it's believable. There is some voice in everyone's heart. Someone will follow that voice, someone won't. Jacques is only the one loyally following the voice from the bottom of his heart though it couldn't be understood by others.

"In the end you do it alone anyway."
